The World Intellectual Property Organization is one of numerous specialized agencies of the United Nations, starting under its name in 1974. The United States, as well as 183 other nations, is a member.[1] It's purpose is to protect intellectual property, though it has been criticized for operating against open-source projects and working against capitalistic traditions.[2]
